Pyran Achieves Additional Breakthroughs in Product Quality & Production Efficiency

MADISON, Wisc., [Sept. 23, 2025]– Pyran, Inc. recently achieved significant milestones in the development of its 1,5 Pentanediol (1,5 PDO) technology, reinforcing its position in the fast-growing biobased chemicals sector with its cost-effective, high-performance biobased materials. These advancements underscore the company’s ongoing commitment to delivering customized solutions that meet stringent quality standards.

“Pyran remains committed to pushing the boundaries of biobased technologies and providing sustainable, cost-competitive products that meet the evolving needs of our customers,” said Kevin Barnett, Pyran co-founder and chief technology officer. “We are proud of these latest breakthroughs and improvements, that underscore our commitment to innovation, operational efficiency, and value-added solutions.”

Key Highlights

  • Color:  Pyran has partnered closely with customers to address one of the common challenges in biobased chemicals: color specifications. Through joint testing protocols and process improvements, the company has aligned its products with the color standards typically expected of petroleum-based materials. Using industry-standard polyol catalysts under typical reaction conditions, Pyran’s biobased 1,5 Pentanediol now delivers color performance on par with petroleum-derived 1,5 PDO and 1,6 Hexanediol (1,6 HDO). This advancement ensures optimal results in demanding applications such as automotive paints, synthetic leathers, industrial coatings, inks, and thermoplastic polyurethanes.

  • Process Optimization:  Building on its thermocatalytic production platform, Pyran has implemented significant process refinements that increase efficiency and reduce capital requirements. These advancements not only enhance cost-competitiveness for customers but also strengthen Pyran’s path to scalable, sustainable manufacturing. The company maintains exclusive global intellectual property rights for this next-generation, low-cost production technology.

Pyran CEO Mel Luetkens said: “We are always looking at ways to provide our customers with unparalleled quality and cost savings to meet the growing global demand for biobased chemicals. These latest developments are another example of that commitment.”
